A CANADIAN MAYOR AT HOME IN REHOVOT
by David Sheen, July 1, Ha'aretz
As mayors from six continents convened in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv this last month to discuss municipal governance, one civic leader used to opportunity to visit family in his old haunt of Rehovot.
Sam Katz, mayor of Winnipeg for the last seven years, was born in Israel 60 years ago and immigrated to Canada as a 6-month-old infant, where he has lived ever since.
Katz says he still maintains ties to his birthplace.
Katz, whose parents were Holocaust survivors, was honored during his trip in a special ceremony at Yad Vashem, where he laid a wreath in memory of his family members that perished during World War II.
